The term geomancy derives from Late Ancient Greek γεωμαντεία (geōmanteía), literally meaning ‘foresight by earth’ or ‘earth divination’, and is composed of γῆ (gē, ‘earth’, as in Gaia) and μαντεία (manteía, ‘divination’ or ‘prophecy’, from mantis ‘seer’).
“This science was very little known, even among the most learned, due to the difficulty it has in itself, the lack of experience one had in it, the lack of curiosity one brought to it, and because men are so inclined to laziness that they do not wish to take the trouble to practice it.”
Gabriel Dupréau, preface to The Geomancy of Lord Christofe de Cattan (Paris, 1558)

Figures
“Geomancy itself the most accurate of divinations, which divines by points of the earth, or any other surfaces, or by a fall, or any other power inscribed, does first reduce them to celestial figures, viz. to those sixteen which we above named, making judgement after an astrological manner, by the properties and observations thereof.”
Henry Cornelius Agrippa, Three Books of Occult Philosophy, translated by James Freake (London, 1651)
